What Motion Capture Teaches Us About Gait
January 2026
Every gait cycle looks a little different. Cadence, stride length, and joint angles shift with terrain, fatigue, mood, even footwear. When we started building Unik Exo's control model, we assumed there was a 'normal' gait curve we could design around. There isn't.
Instead, we capture gait across a wide population using marker-based motion capture, then train our assistive controller to recognise the shape of an individual's gait rather than match them to an average. This lets the exoskeleton assist the wearer's own pattern instead of forcing a generic one onto them.
It also means every new wearer effectively 'teaches' the device during their first calibration session, a short walk that lets the controller learn their baseline before assistance ramps up.
